Beware of unwanted guests while fishing

On 6th June, I shared a video warning the fishing enthusiasts for what other than fish they may get hooked on to their fishing line.

Today, while reading the world news, another similar news attracted my attention. Now this is a bit weird as while fishing and almost catching a mythical 13 feet giant squib, the fishermen find a hungry shark coming over and attacking their cache.

Mail Online reports that The Australian Daily Telegraph fishing columnist - and big-game fisherman - Al McGlashan was sailing off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, at the weekend when he came across the carcass of a 13-foot squid.

And when McGlashan got into the water to explore the carcass, he found he was not the only interested party - a large blue shark came and made himself known, before devouring parts of the carcass.

Beware while you go fishing

Fishing is one of the most enjoyable and 'in' hobby of a lot of hobbyists around the world. The fishing enthusiasts spend countless hours sitting and waiting for a little jerk in their fishing rods to catch the booty. But sometime you may get something other than a fish - may be a an old boot, under water bush or  even an Octopus.

Yes Octopus - though catching octopus while fishing is very rare, but sometimes it does get caught on to your fishing hook - so beware of such an eventuality and do not panic. Rest assured nothing gigantic as seen in movies would come out but remember it is bigger than the biggest fish you ever hooked.

I came across the following video on YouTube and I thought of sharing it with my fishing hobbyists with a little commentary as shared with the video:

Megapickles, who shared the video adds: Bryce hooked into a octopus which he originally thought was a snag. I was able to get some pretty sweet underwater shots while it was next to his kayak. The octopus was kept and enjoyed. It swallowed a pretty large hook so its survival was unlikely. I used a Kodak Playsport (Zx3) to film this.

It is further added: For the record, I didn't kill it, or eat it. I just filmed it. Also, it was not wasted. Its sacrifice was well respected among those that did eat it. I'm not a biologist of any kind, but a simple search on the internet shows that octopuses are not a rare animal. In fact, there is evidence that suggests they are overpopulated in their range. They have a life-span of 3 to 5 years so I'm guessing because of its size that this one was nearing the end of that span. So, I would rather it be killed quickly and not wasted than it be set free to suffer and starve for the last year or so of its life with a six inch hook in its mouth.

Fishing Reels for Beginners

One starts to fish with homemade rods, obviously with no reels. All one has to do is to get a long strong stick, attach a fishing string and a hook. That is how I caught my first fish and was very excited about it when the small fish came jerking out of the water.

But that is not how one can go along because bigger catch would strain the ordinary wood to give away. There one should go for a fishing rod with reel. While the rods may vary in lengths, it is basically the reel that matters. For the beginners, a closed faced reel is recommended with their simple push-button release system that allows a novice to fling the hooked bait to long throw. These inexpensive reels are good to start, especially in the stagnant ponds where the fish have lesser agility and maneuverability as compared to live water in lakes, rivers and even seas.

For experienced fishers, the spinning reels are more appropriate. The reels spin the line around a spool while the action in the turning shoots the spool up and down to keep the line uniform. One will have to get used to using these reels as these don’t have the push button release of the closed face reels. The trick to use these reels is to hold the line pressed between the index finger and the rod and rear back and throw. There is a caution here that the line must be let loose from the finger when throwing in the forward motion. If you come across a spincaster reel, don’t get confused as it is the same as the spinning reel.

Another type or reel is called a bait-caster. Although these have push button type of release, but one has to keep the finger planted firmly on the spool when pressing the release button. Only during the throwing motion the finger pressure is to be released when the rod is at the front end of the cast. If not thrown properly, these types of reels have the tendency to backlash, causing the line to get tangled all in the spool and becomes very hard to untangle. Having said that, these reels are preferred by experienced fishermen as these can handle any duress that a fish can throw at.

So choose your reels as per your experience and ease of use. Dont use a reel that makes it harder for you to handle and spoiling your fishing day.

Fishing as a hobby

As I wrote in one of my earlier posts that Nature is calling us back to it as it is out there in the open lush green valleys and meadows one really start to understand the true meaning of life and happiness. And now let me start from this premise and take you to yet another very absorbing, interesting and soul inspiring hobby of fishing.

Combined with camping or undertaken as a solo event for a day out at a lake side or nearby stream, fishing is a true hobby where one can sit for hours observing he deep blue water and the reflections in it of the nearby trees and mountains while one awaits a healthy fish to give a jerk to the fishing line. Besides the fun of catching a fish, one finds time to really spend with one’s family and friends, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. From normal lakeside fishing to to deep sea fishing, or from ice fishing to night fishing, the fishing hobby provides you much leisure and pleasure than any other hobby, while keeping you very close to the nature.

I caught my first fish from a lake in Iran many years ago from a hand held fishing line with plastic bait attached to it. Although the catch was not very big, but I still cherish the joy of having caught my first fish.

When fishing is combined with camping, the joy of both gets multiplied as there is no hurrying back home. And when one has sufficient catch, it is more fun to make fire from the twigs and tree branches and roast the fish on raw fire and eat without the aid of fork and knife as we do in restaurants. There can be no greater joy in eating one’s own caught fish right there in nowhere with friends and families. Try it someday or accompany a friend going out for fishing – you will not only love it, but will remember your maiden experience for years to come.
